Concept of Evaluation and Measurement

Anju Rani
Evaluation is an important component of teaching- learning process. Its main objective is qualitative improvement. Formative and Summative both are approaches of evaluation. Formative evaluation is undertaken to improve an existing programme. Summative evaluation is frequently undertaken in order to decide which one of the several competing programmes or materials is best. Measurement is a process of quantification. It means precision and quantification of a phenomenon or variable. Measurement is “assigning a numerical quantity to educational applications”.There are four levels of measurement.-Nominal scale, -Ordinal scale,-Interval scale and -Ratio scale. Nominal scale is the lowest scale of measurement and Ratio scale is the highest scale of measurement.
